David Birney is an award winning actor/director. Mr. Birney adapted and directed Mark Twain's The Diaries of Adam and Eve for presentation on the prestigious PBS series American Playhouse. Developing the piece for the stage subsequently he has directed productions for important regional theatres such as the Hartford Stage Company, the Barter Theatre and on tour on both the East and West coasts. He has also published A Christmas Pudding and produced it in Los Angeles in different versions for over fifteen years. Another version, A Christmas Pudding II has been published this year.
A substantial television career has included starring roles in series: Live Shot, The Adams Chronicles, Glitter, St. Elsewhere, Serpico, and Bridget Loves Bernie. TV miniseries leading roles include: Testimony of Two Men, Master of the Game, The Bible, Valley of the Dolls, Night of the Fox and Seal Morning.
He has also starred in many television films, among them Love and Betrayal, Long Journey Home, The Five of Me, "Ohms, The Deadly Game, High Midnight" and The Champions.
Mr. Birney's extensive stage credits include starring roles on Broadway in Amadeus, Benefactors, and Man and Superman, and appearing in major roles at the American Shakespeare Festival, New York's Lincoln Center Repertory Theatre, the New York Shakespeare Festival, Los Angeles' Mark Taper Forum, Washington, D.C.'s Shakespeare Theatre and numerous regional theatres.
Leading roles include Jack Tanner in Man and Superman, Cusins in Major Barbara, Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo, Mercutio, Richard II, Richard III, Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, Antony in Antony and Cleopatra, Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, Prospero in The Tempest, Jaques in As You Like It, Prospero in The Tempest, Christy Mahon in The Playboy of the Western World, Young Man in Summertree, Jerry in The Zoo Story, Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, Arthur in Camelot, Higgins in My Fair Lady, Matt Friedman in Talley's Folly, David in Social Security, Andrew in Love Letters, Jamie Tyrone in Moon for the Misbegotten, Con Melody in A Touch of the Poet, and Lenny Ganz in Rumors.
He is a recent recipient of the Prestigious Millenium Recognition Award from The Shakespeare Theatre in the Nation's Capitol for his contribution to classical theatre.
Mr. Birney is most proud of his work for Dartmouth College in creating a Class of Legacy for the Performing Arts. He has served on the Theatre Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts and is a current panelist for the Javits Fellowship Awards. He is a board member of the Foundation for Bio Medical Research, and has been a frequent spokesman for children’s' health and welfare issues serving as Co-Chair for the American Diabetes Association.
He has three extraordinary children, his daughters Kate and Mollie, and his son Peter. He lives currently in Santa Monica, CA.
